Introductory Summary: A high school student in the 10th grade, is performing poorly in their Spanish class. The student has ADHD but is not getting properly accommodated. The parent requested a meeting with the IEP coordinator and the teacher.
IEP Definition: An IEP (individualized education program) is a legal document required under the US federal law known as the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which makes a student eligible for individualized special education services. To qualify for special education services, a student must meet one or more of 13 federally recognized disability categories. IEP meetings occur on an annual basis. However, if the need for more meetings within a year arises, this can be requested by the parent and/or legal guardian.

Main Challenges: There are some longer terms that will be hard for interpreters that haven’t encountered them before. The student’s mother repeats the same sentiment over and over throughout the encounter, which can be difficult for the other party in an interpreted encounter because they may feel like the interpreter isn’t properly communicating with the parent.
