IEP Definition
An IEP (individualized education program) is a legal document required under the US federal law known as the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which makes a student eligible for individualized special education services. To qualify for special education services, a student must meet one or more of 13 federally recognized disability categories. IEP meetings occur on an annual basis. However, if the need for more meetings within a year arises, this can be requested by the parent and/or legal guardian.

Full Summary
It is time for a sixth grader's annual IEP evaluation. School staff, parent, and interpreter meet remotely via video conference. The parent shows engagement in the meeting by asking several questions. A clear explanation of the goals is given to understand the student's progress.
Main Challenges
The conversations can last a long time when the speech pathologist and occupational therapist review the annual IEP goals. Also, the occupational therapist speaks fast. Terminology from special education can pose a challenge, as well as phrases unique to Mexico, for interpreters that are unfamiliar with these things.
