Full Summary
It is a difficult and emotionally charged Involuntary Transfer Appeal Meeting. A 10th grader at La Silla High School is missing many credits and has been found using drugs twice on campus. He is accused of using drugs a third time by a school officer who sees him coming out of the school bathroom on his way to third period class. The officer looked him in the eyes and noticed they were irritated and asked him to go to the nurse’s office to get a urine test. The consequence this minor has is an involuntary one-year transfer to a non-traditional setting school if he tests positive for drug use. The school principal explains to the mother he is at risk of being a high school drop-out if measures are not taken now. The student needs to obtain over 50 high school credits to obtain his actual grade level and graduate on time.
Main Challenges
The conversation is difficult for everyone involved: parent, student, principal, and the interpreter. The environment gets very emotional; the parent begins to cry. The interpreter’s role is to deliver the message, stay calm, and utilize a compassionate approach, despite seeing the parent crying when she learns for the first time her son is smoking wax (cannabis) at school.
