Full Summary: Margarita Dmitrieva was recently hospitalized after falling into a diabetic coma. She’s about to be discharged from the hospital and meets with Mackenzie, a diabetes care and education specialist, to learn more about her diabetes, a condition Margarita admittedly knows little about. Mackenzie teaches her the ins and outs of living with diabetes, including managing her diet, checking her blood sugar, self-administering insulin injections, and exercising.

Main Challenges: When interpreting for diabetes education, patients are often presented with a lot of information that can include high-register medical terminology. This can, of course, pose a challenge if a provider does not adjust their register when a patient happens to have low health literacy, but it can also be a challenge when providers use metaphors to explain concepts, as these may contain unexpected vocabulary. Additionally, patient education materials are often provided, but these materials are not always available in the patient’s language.
